Lakwitchee Sagh-a-lie translates as Clams Above in the Chinook Wawa, a trade language used widely until WWll from Northern California to Alaska. My grandmother, Bea Spalding, published a Chinook dictionary in 1947. I began using the dictionary in late 2021 to generate ideas for artworks. This drawing represents the second stage in a series of drawings of this Chinook phrase.
