Biography

I am one of the fourth generation of my family living on Pender Island. However, I did not spend much of my childhood on Pender. I lived in nine other towns and cities in Western Canada, including 20 years in Victoria, BC. Growing up I was exposed to a broad range of visual arts, including Pacific Northwest First Nations art. My father's side of the family are Métis and also have Coast Salish roots. Although I knew of my heritage while growing up only recently have I actively explored it, in both my life and art.

As long as I can remember I've drawn. I decided in my late teens that I needed to practise if I were to be good. Years later my collection of sketchbooks and drawings provide a record of people, places and thoughts. And now there's Procreate on the iPad...

I bought my first SLR 35mm camera in 1972 and shortly after had a darkroom. Cameras, and darkrooms came and went but when digital photography came along I leapt onboard. At the University of Victoria a workstudy position in the Fine Arts Computer Lab opened my eyes to the promise of a new program: PhotoShop.

Painting began in earnest while studying at the Victoria College of Art. In the early 1980s I operated under the name The Dept. of Public Cow Works, stencilling graffiti, which led to postering, and eventually to street performance. That, in turn, led to an ongoing interest in live theatre (set design, acting, a bit of writing and directing).

I enjoy making sculpture but having a small studio most of my sculpting work takes place in the warmer months outdoors.

Over the years I've done a bit of graphic design, including a half dozen years working as kelly i Design. During that time I worked on web design, book layout, print ads and wedding photography.

Artist's Statement

Consistent in my visual arts career it is the need to explore: concepts, techniques and materials. A direct result is my mixed media work. Working mainly with photography since the 1990s I began to miss the tactile nature of painting and sculpture which led me to my current investigations of shallow relief, shadow boxes and layering imagery. My abiding interest in art history informs many of my concepts and compositions. I enjoy working near, and crossing, the margins of fine art, craft and the graphic arts. The concept of 'purity' in the arts does not interest me; I'm much more fascinated by integration and cross-pollinating of forms and techniques.
