Biography

Although one of the fourth generation of my family living on Pender Island (in British Columbia's Southern Gulf Islands) I have also lived in nine different towns and cities in Western Canada. Growing up I was exposed to a broad range of visual arts including Pacific Northwest Aborignal art (I've Metis heritage). I've spent about half my life on quiet little Pender Island but love to travel. My travels have taken me to most of Western Europe, a large part of SE Asia and south as far as Honduras. (Plans are afoot for Ecuador.)

As long as I can remember I've drawn. I've a collection of sketchbooks going back to my 20s. I bought my first SLR 35mm camera when I was 20 and shortly after had a darkroom. Painting began in earnest while studying at the Victoria College of Art. My initial claim to fame came as a street artist in the early 1980s while operating under the name The Dept. of Public Cow Works. Graffiti led to postering and eventually to street performance. That, in turn, led to an ongoing interest in live theatre (set design, acting, a bit of writing and directing).

I attended the University of Victoria as a mature student with the purpose of expanding my understanding of art critisism/theory, art history and working in sculpture. After a couple of years of studio work and one year of strictly academic studies I switched the focus of my studio work to photography.

Since graduating my artwork has swung between painting, sculpture, drawing and photography but since 2010 I've worked primarily in mixed media with an emphasis on photo-based imagery and concepts.

Artist's Statement

Consistent in my visual arts career it is the need to explore: concepts, techniques and materials. A direct result is my mixed media work. Working mainly with photography since the 1990s I began to miss the tactile nature of painting and sculpture which led me to my current investigations of shallow relief, shadow boxes and layering imagery. My abiding interest in art history informs many of my concepts and compositions. I enjoy working near, and crossing, the margins of fine art, craft and the graphic arts. The concept of 'purity' in the arts does not interest me; I'm much more fascinated by integration and cross-pollinating of forms and techniques.
